Fiona Coll

As part of ISTEP’s new Graduate Communication Initiative, Fiona is piloting modular courses, workshops, and cohort-based programs that teach students to think through writing in preparation for communicating effectively about complex topics. Fiona also teaches at the Graduate Centre for Academic Communication, where she leads workshops about graduate-level writing processes and courses on Writing NSERC Proposals and Thesis-Writing in the Physical and Life Sciences. Fiona’s research explores graduate writing pedagogy through three major questions.

First, what role does affect play in how graduate engineering students develop writing competencies? Second, what impact do collaborative, peer-based learning strategies have on individual writing and communication development? Finally, what can the history of technologically mediated writing practices teach us about how technology shapes the way we write today? Fiona’s work has appeared in Scholarly Editing, Interdisciplinary Digital Engagement in Arts & Humanities, and Victorian Review. She is currently co-editing a book collection called Writing Together: Building Social Writing Opportunities for Graduate Students.
