External Relations & Training
ISTEP is a living ecosystem where industry, academia, and education strengthen each other. Our external portfolio is stronger than ever, with new pathways for engagement, new partnerships, and milestone moments.
Introducing the ISTEP Professional Learning Hub
At ISTEP, we’re redefining what it means to lead in technical industries. We empower people across all stages of their professional journeys to evolve into visionary, transformative leaders.
We are proud to have launched our new professional learning platform this year, allowing us to bring our expertise to a whole new stage. We are offering an asynchronous, fully online, self-guided micro-credential designed with today’s working professional in mind.
This initiative is led by ISTEP Business Development & External Partnerships Coordinator Norris Ma. Our debut course – Foundations of Technical Leadership – takes over 15 years of engineering leadership research and makes it accessible to any technical professional interested in developing their leadership. This course is about empowering technical professionals to lead high-impact teams, cultivate a culture of inclusion, and communicate effectively across cultures and worldviews.
This is only the beginning. We are hard at work developing new learning opportunities and laying the groundwork for a new way for professionals to engage with U of T Engineering.
Building Global Partnerships
Building on over a decade of prior collaborations, U of T has entered a strategic partnership with Ericsson aimed at advancing wireless communications networks.
The partnership connects the university’s leading researchers with Ericsson, creating new research and development opportunities here in Toronto that will support Canada’s global telecommunications network.
ISTEP will support the partnership’s talent development stream, providing leadership and communications training to the technical personnel overseeing the future implementation of these technologies.
A Community of Leaders
The Troost ILead Community of Practice on Engineering Leadership (CoP) brings together researchers, organizations, and engineering leaders to accelerate learning and advance leadership practices. Stewarded by Professor Emily Moore and Julietta Saberian, Assistant Director of the CoP, it serves as a cross-sector platform for meaningful connection and exchange – linking people, ideas, and expertise to move engineering leadership forward. The CoP serves as a vehicle through which ISTEP advances lifelong learning and engages our partner organizations through webinars, in-person events, and an annual conference.
Engineering Leadership in the Age of AI: Purpose, Productivity, and Possibility
What does the future of engineering leadership look like in the age of AI? This was the question posed in this year's annual CoP conference. In a full day of rich discussions, we heard diverse perspectives on how we lead, innovate, and adapt in a rapidly evolving technological landscape with guest speakers from the Centre for Analytics & Artificial Intelligence Engineering (CARTE) and Action/Insight.
