SUMMARY:What Inspires Ethical Research? Lessons from Biomedical Engineering Faculty
DESCRIPTION:Fred Kan Distinguished Lecture In Engineering Ethics 2026\nPromoting ethical engineering research is necessary given the potential for widespread social and technological impacts of engineering research outcomes. But what motivates engineers to think and act ethically\, particularly in the domain of research? In this interactive talk\, Dr. Justin L. Hess will address this question by sharing types of critical incidents experienced by engineering faculty who conduct biomedical engineering research. The incident types denote the formative impacts of professional culture and academic norms\, engaging in ethical behaviors\, observing questionable behaviors\, attending to novel perspectives\, formal and informal training and mentoring events\, and reflecting on one’s own views and experiences. By understanding what experiences inspire engineers to think and act ethically\, institutions of higher education and engineering organizations will be better positioned to support ethical growth be it in formal courses\, faculty research labs\, organizational training efforts\, or by reshaping institutional norms.  \nAbout the Speaker: \n\nDr. Justin L. Hess is an associate professor in the School of Engineering Education\, where he also co-directs the Multidisciplinary Engineering and Interdisciplinary Engineering Studies undergraduate programs. Dr. Hess’s research explores how engineers develop ethical and empathic dispositions. He received his PhD in Engineering Education from Purdue University in 2015\, and his BS/MS in Civil Engineering from Purdue in 2011 and 2015\, respectively. He served as the assistant director of the STEM Education Research Institute at Purdue University for four years (2015-2019) before returning to Purdue as a tenure-track faculty member in 2019.

These E2R2 meetings have been co-hosted by Professor Deb Tihanyi and Dr. Qin Liu. \nSpeaker: Dr. Victoria Kerr \nDate/Time: January 29 | 12:00 – 1:00 PM \nRoom: MY 763 \nTitle: Understanding Engagement in Engineering Student Project Teams \nDespite extensive research on improving the effectiveness of student project-teams\, low engagement from one or more team members is a common and persistent issue. While previous research has largely focused on individual behaviours and accountability\, this work presents a holistic view of student engagement and focuses on the impacts of the team environment on student engagement within the first-year engineering design-team context. Through longitudinal mixed-methods and qualitative studies\, it was found that there are significant positive relationships between team dynamics and student engagement\, and some of these relationships differ by gender. To facilitate the development of team dynamics and student engagement\, six categories of team norms were identified\, which can be utilized by instructors to facilitate engagement within their student project-teams. This research contributes to a broader understanding of student engagement in first-year project teams and the importance of team norms and team dynamics within this context. \nAll are welcome to attend this drop-in session\, no registration needed. DESCRIPTION:The OPTIONS Program is an initiative to support all engineering graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to explore diverse career options.  \nPurpose & Content  \nTake a deep dive into career management and join a supportive community of like-minded MEng students exploring career possibilities. The Cohort Program is an eight week\, non-credit program facilitated by faculty and professional development experts. The program provides:  \n\nEight\, two-hour\, live sessions \n\n\nA short instructional video on resumes and cover letters for viewing on your own time \n\n\nTwo career management tools to develop an individualized\, career exploration plan \n\n\nA one-on-one\, 30 min meeting with a career coach (optional) \n\n\nPersonalized feedback on your resume and cover letter \n\n\nA mock interview\, personalized feedback on your interview skills\, and access to an interview preparation toolkit \n\n\nAn informational interview with an alumni and a database of informational interview questions \n\n\nA Peer Success Team to support your career exploration \n\nSchedule  \nReview the MEng OPTIONS Winter 2026 schedule before submitting an application to ensure you can attend all eight sessions. Previously\, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Shoichet Lab (Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry) and studied the delivery of therapeutics for retinal stem cell regeneration. She completed her PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Paula Hammond and Prof. Bradley Olsen\, where she developed materials to treat noncompressible hemorrhage and cancer. Her broader research interests span the field of biomaterials\, immunotherapy\, and polymer synthesis. Outside of the lab\, she is especially passionate about teaching and scientific outreach\, and has taught polymer synthesis as a graduate instructor at MIT.    \nSaeed Shakib\, Planner\, Ontario Ministry of Transportation  \nBio forthcoming  \nEvgueniia (Jenya) Doudareva\, Senior Manager\, AI/Responsible AI\, OnX \nEvgueniia (Jenya) is a triple graduate of UofT Engineering\, who completed her Doctorate degree from the University of Toronto’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 2022. Professionally\, her recurring passions are consulting and technology. Today Jenya uses her background in industrial engineering in Cloud and AI consulting at OnX\, where she helps businesses find effective and ethical ways to deploy AI. She is a published poet and science fiction writer.  \nGursans Guven Isin\, Assistant Professor\, University of Manitoba\, Department of Civil Engineering  \nDr. Gursans Guven Isin is an Assistant Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Manitoba. Prior to that\, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto in the Sustainable Systems Group under the supervision of Prof. Shoshanna Saxe. She received her MSc in Construction Management and PhD in Civil Engineering from the Istanbul Technical University. Dr. Guven Isin’s research interests are in the areas of automation\, sensing and IT applications for construction engineering and management\, digital twins and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Her current research focuses on the utilization and integration of automation and data capture technologies with BIM for improving processes and operations in construction projects as well as the applications of AI and immersive visualization technologies for supporting the design\, construction and operational stages of the built environment. She currently directs the Construction Engineering and Management Group at the University of Manitoba and serves as the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) Manitoba Section Chair as well as the Vice-Chair of the Construction Division.  \nAniss Zaoui\, Lignocellulose Research Scientist\, agapyo  \nDr. Zaoui is a Research Scientist at Agapyo\, where he works on developing sustainable bioplastics from wood waste. He earned his PhD in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto\, following an earlier PhD in polymer chemistry completed in Algeria. His academic journey spans chemistry\, materials science\, and engineering\, reflecting a non-linear career path shaped by interdisciplinary research and international experience. He now applies his research background to industry-driven innovation and is passionate about supporting graduate students in navigating diverse career pathways beyond academia.  \nModerator – Lisa Romkey\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Director\, ISTEP \nLisa Romkey serves as Associate Professor\, Teaching and Associate Director of the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice at the University of Toronto (ISTEP).  In her position\, Lisa teaches courses for undergraduate and graduate students in engineering & society and engineering education. Her research focuses on engineering teaching and learning\, with an emphasis on sociotechnical thinking and life-long learning.   \nLisa also serves as Director of the Collaborative Specialization in Engineering Education\, which offers an opportunity for research and study in engineering education through the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education or the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.   \nThrough her career in higher education\, Lisa has spearheaded various projects in K-12 outreach\, curriculum development\, student engagement and teaching support. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Guelph\, and Masters and Doctoral Degrees in Education from the University of Toronto.  \n\nConcurrent Panel Two  \nLaura Bradbury\, Space Systems Operations Manager\, GHGSAT \nLaura Bradbury is a Space Systems Operations Manager at GHGSat\, a global leader in high-resolution satellite measurements of greenhouse gas emissions. She oversees the technical operations and ground station infrastructure of GHGSat’s growing satellite constellation\, manages satellite licensing and RF spectrum coordination\, and supports the current satellite missions in a systems engineering capacity. Laura spent her early career at the Space Flight Laboratory\, where she held roles spanning systems engineering\, satellite AIT\, and mission management of microsatellite programs for Canadian and international partners. She holds a BASc in Engineering Science and an MASc from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies.  \nTaylr Cawte\, Senior Data Engineer\, RBC  \nTaylr Cawte earned his MASc at the University of Toronto\, conducting research with the Bazylak Group on microfluidic transport in porous media for clean-energy systems such as PEM fuel cells and water electrolyzers. His research explores biophysics at the single-molecule and single-cell levels\, focusing on mechanobiology\, DNA-based molecular devices\, and biosensors. He aims to uncover how cells interact physically with their environment and develop innovative tools for disease diagnosis and treatment. Dr.  Li earned his PhD in Chemistry and MASc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto\, following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Razeq\, Senior Regulatory Affairs Officer\, Health Canada  \nFakhria is a Senior Regulatory Affairs Officer in the Investigational Testing Division (clinical trials for medical devices) at Health Canada.  She has been at Health Canada since 2018 and has worked in policy\, regulatory and operational areas responsible for regulating investigational testing of medical devices\, veterinary drugs\, and assignment of Drug Identification Numbers (DIN). In her current position\, she works closely with internal and external stakeholders to support effective decision-making and regulatory compliance. DESCRIPTION:Title: UBelong! Stories as a Promising Intervention to Address Equity Gaps in First-Year Engineering \nAbstract \nThis talk describes an ongoing multi-institutional project focused on developing and implementing an ecological belonging intervention in engineering using stories developed through focus groups with students who previously took a first-year engineering programming course. The ecological belonging intervention is a one-time 45-minute intervention delivered in class that conveys the message that typical struggle is normal and surmountable. We hypothesize that these stories undermine stereotype threat and promote social belonging. This presentation will discuss the emerging results of quasi-experimental implementation and longitudinal interviews. Our data indicates that the intervention has significant impacts on student belonging\, equity gaps in the course\, and retention from survey and institutional data. Finally\, we will discuss the emerging results of qualitative research with the faculty delivering the intervention that indicate this intervention also shapes positive experiences for faculty.  \nSpeaker Biography \nAllison Godwin\, Ph.D. is the Dr. G. Stephen Irwin ‘67\, ‘68 Professor of Engineering Education Research in the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University. Her research focuses on how identity\, among other affective factors\, influences diverse students to choose engineering and persist in engineering. She also studies how different experiences within the practice and culture of engineering foster or hinder belonging and identity development. Dr. Godwin graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education. Her research earned her a 2016 National Science Foundation CAREER Award focused on characterizing latent diversity\, which includes diverse attitudes\, mindsets\, and approaches to learning to understand engineering students’ identity development. She has won several awards for her research including the 2021 Journal of Civil Engineering Education Best Technical Paper\, the 2021 Chemical Engineering Education William H. Corcoran Award\, the 2022 American Educational Research Association Education in the Professions (Division I) 2021-2022 Outstanding Research Publication Award\, and the 2023 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Award for Excellence in Engineering Education Research.

SUMMARY:ISTEP Speaker Series - Kathryn Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Title: Illuminating the Sociotechnical in Engineering Education and Practice \n  \nAbstract \nI was trained as a technically-focused electrical engineer working on control of wind energy systems. Although I enjoyed that work (and still practice in that area)\, I began to realize that the world’s wicked problems\, including climate change – a big motivator for me – require us to step back and think of large and messy systems sociotechnically. What does that mean\, and how does it impact our work as engineering faculty\, students\, and practitioners? In this seminar\, I will answer these questions and connect sociotechnical thinking to concepts of macroethics and justice\, as well as describing how sociotechnical thinking can help us to expand our engineering problem definition process so that we can support more sustainable long-term solutions. I’ll share experiences and findings in both the U.S. context and from my sabbatical at the University of Calgary in 2021. These include working with experts across not only various engineering disciplines but learning new skills\, language\, and norms through in-depth collaborations with social scientists and education specialists. I hope to spark your interests in seeing your work from new and broader perspectives\, as well as give some insight into how to act on these new perspectives. \nBio \nKathryn Johnson is a Professor at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in the Department of Electrical Engineering and is jointly appointed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). She received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado. She then completed a postdoctoral research assignment at NREL before joining CSM as the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in 2005. Dr. Johnson conducts research in two areas: control of wind and hybrid energy systems and sociotechnical engineering education. Some of her recent projects include control of ultra-scale 25-MW and 50-MW wind turbines\, control co-design for novel floating offshore wind turbine structures\, and optimization of hybrid energy systems including generation\, storage\, and end uses. Her engineering education research centers on understanding and promoting macroethics and sociotechnical thinking within engineering education and was recognized in 2021 with a Fulbright Canada Research Chair in STEM Education award at the University of Calgary\, Alberta.

She works primarily at the intersection of technology and culture\, and she speaks\, writes\, consults\, and facilitates globally around design\, education (particularly engineering education)\, and equity and inclusion issues. Prior to joining Olin College\, Dr. Chachra held an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship at MIT\, and she completed her graduate and undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. While an engineering student\, she co-founded Science Outreach\, the first science and engineering summer camp at the university.

SUMMARY:ISTEP Speaker Series - Prof. Susan McCahan
DESCRIPTION:The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence over the past year has brought awareness of the capabilities of this technology and AI more generally. One of the questions that often gets asked is; “will this technology transform\, or displace jobs?”. It has been recently reported by Goldman Sachs\, Brookings\, and others that Engineering\, and specifically some of Engineering disciplines\, may be highly exposed to AI disruption. This talk will examine the analyses that lead to this conclusion\, and what aspects of Engineering occupations are potentially vulnerable. Are we spending precious class time teaching skills and knowledge that\, in a few years\, will be about as useful as teaching our students how to use slide rules and log tables? There will be time at the conclusion to discuss the ways Engineering curricula may need to change to ensure that our graduates are capable of both working with AI\, and able to bring value to their work above and beyond the capabilities of AI.  \n Susan McCahan is the Vice Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate Education and Vice Provost\, Academic Programs at the University of Toronto. She is responsible for developing and implementing initiatives to re-imagine and strengthen academic experiences at the University. This includes strategic leadership on IT systems and data systems that support academic processes and teaching; and leadership on key pedagogical initiatives such as experiential learning. Susan’s Academic Programs portfolio oversees governance and quality assurance of the University’s 700 graduate and undergraduate programs. Previously\, she was the Vice Dean\, Undergraduate in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. She is a professor in Mechanical Engineering\, who specialized in thermodynamics. However\, her current area of research is engineering education. She is the author of a textbook for first year engineering design\, which she continues to teach. Susan is a fellow of the American Association for Advancement in Science and is the past president of the Canadian Engineering Education Association. Design itself is often taken to be a high-level cognitive ability. While the cognitive processes required to create\, implement\, and validate an innovative solution have been explored in previous work\, the toll of such processes on designer cognitive state has not been identified. \nThis talk will review ongoing research efforts by the Technology and Human Research in Engineering Design Group to uncover the fundamental linkages between human designers\, design processes\, and designed products. This talk will review emergent research that demonstrates 1) the cognitive experiences of designers dynamically shift dependent upon the design task\, 2) design processes and outcomes drive distinct rhetorical patterns\, and 3) designers engage in distinct patterns of solution space exploration that are linked with design outcomes. \nAbout the presenter: \nJessica Menold is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Design and Innovation and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She is the director of the Technology and Human Research in Engineering Design lab and conducts research at the intersection of engineering design\, manufacturing\, and new product development. Her current work focuses on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of new product development processes\, integrating design thinking into engineering education\, identifying the factors that contribute to or detract from the success of high-tech startups\, and Design for Inspection in advanced manufacturing environments. Her work is dedicated to improving the design of engineered products and systems through evidence-based design methods\, rapid prototyping\, and performance analysis. Her work is supported by the United States National Science Foundation and the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Dr. Menold is also the Associate Director for Outreach and Inclusion at the Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory\, Penn State’s Makerspace.

It was developed by two Stanford engineering professors and is now taught at the Stanford Life Design Lab. DESCRIPTION:The OPTIONS Program is an initiative to support all engineering graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in exploring diverse career options \nPurpose & Content\nTake a deep dive into career management and join a supportive community of like-minded MEng students exploring career possibilities. The Cohort Program is a nine week\, non-credit program facilitated by faculty and professional development experts. The program provides: \n\nNine\, two-hour\, online\, live sessions that create a structured career exploration experience\nA short instructional video on resumes and cover letters for viewing on your own time\nTwo career management tools to develop an individualized\, career plan\nA one-on-one\, 30 min meeting with a career coach (optional)\nA one-on-one\, 20 min resume and cover letter review with an instructor (optional)\nA one-on-one\, 30 min meeting with an engineering professor (optional)\nA mock interview\, personalized feedback on your interview skills\, and access to an interview preparation toolkit\nA mock informational interview\, a mechanism to establish at least one alumni contact in a field of interest\, and and a database of informational interview questions\nA Peer Success Team to support your career exploration\n\nSchedule\nReview the schedule here before submitting an application to ensure you can attend all nine sessions. \nBenefits\nIn addition to the programming\, resources\, and one-on-one meetings listed above\, participants who complete the program (attend seven of nine sessions) receive: \n\nA digital certificate of completion approved by the Vice-Dean\, Graduate Studies and the OPTIONS’ Faculty Convenor.\nFour credits for the Graduate Professional Skills (GPS) Program at the School of Graduate Studies. You will participate in interactive activities and small group conversations. You will need access to a laptop/computer with audio and\, ideally\, video. \nAll nine sessions occur live and online on Wednesdays from 2 – 4 pm EST between January 27 and March 31\, exclusive of February 17. See schedule here. One-on-one meetings occur between 9 – 5 pm EST. \nApplicant Commitment\n\nBy applying to The OPTIONS Program\, I commit to attend all nine sessions. Since 2017\, we have delivered seven OPTIONS cohorts to 200 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
